If you’re craving a change of scenery but don’t want to commit to an overnight trip, Lancaster, Ohio is an easy win for families. Located just 45 minutes southeast of Columbus, this charming town offers a great mix of hands-on attractions, outdoor space for kids to burn energy, and local spots parents will enjoy too – making it perfect for a relaxed, low-stress day trip with kids.
Play at AHA! Children’s Museum
1708 River Valley Circle South, Lancaster, OH
Perfect for: children from 6 months to 8 years of age
This bright, interactive museum is designed for learning through play, with exhibits that encourage kids to explore, imagine, and move their bodies. You’ll find pretend play areas, hands-on science and art activities, and rotating exhibits to keep things fresh. It’s not huge, which makes it manageable for parents, but there’s plenty to keep kids engaged. My kids (ages 3 and 5) played here for three hours without getting bored.
Mom tip: Plan to arrive close to opening time – it’s easier to explore before it gets busy.
Lunch at Provisions
135 West Main Street, Lancaster, OH
Perfect for: An easy, kid-friendly lunch
We stopped by Provisions for lunch after playing at the museum. It’s a local favorite that offers a casual atmosphere, quick service, and menu options that both kids and parents can enjoy. Expect sandwiches, soups, salads, and fresh-baked goods.
Mom tip: Order the tuna melt… it’s seriously so good!
Other local lunch options in the area include Ale House 1890 and Cherry Street Pub.
Other Local Attractions:
There are a lot of other fun attractions for families in Lancaster that we didn’t have a chance to visit because my kids fell asleep immediately after lunch. If the weather is good, Rising Park looks like a great place to play outdoors and explore nature. And before heading back to Columbus, you may want to stop by Gypsy Joe’s Ice Cream & Donuts for a sweet treat.
Lancaster is proof that you don’t need a long drive or overnight stay to make meaningful family memories. This day trip is simple, fun, and kid-approved. If you’ve visited Lancaster with your kids, I’d love to know your favorite spots!
